Abstract

The purpose of this study was to design a brief scale to measure attitudes towards financial behavior, and therefore it was an instrumental study. Based on the review of the attitude construct, tentative items were proposed and evaluated by expert jurors. Subsequently, with the respective modifications, a final scale was obtained and 501 young adults were surveyed in Caracas (Venezuela), where the average age was 35 years old and 60% were women. Based on the scale responses, an Exploratory Factor Analysis was performed and according to the fit indicators, the best factorial structure was composed of 4 attitudinal dimensions: Money Management, Saving, Borrowing and Impossibility. Consequently, the correlations with other scales used to evaluate convergent and discriminant validity were significant (p<0.05), also the reliability was adequate according to Cronbach's Alpha (α>.60), both for the general scale and for the dimensions. Thus, the instrument has psychometric indicators appropriate for research, which constitutes a first approximation to the measurement of the construct.
